The definition of a producer can get really confusing. Most people make a beat, send it to the artist, and the deal is done (this partially is production). However, my understanding of a "producer" is quite different. Allocating the budget, figuring out the artist's needs, looking for the right feel, right studio, right sound, and putting the track together are all important.
I like to work 1 on 1 with the artist, discuss what the artist needs, and put the project together. Obviously, I make beats too, but I prefer to sit down and work on something that the artist actually wants. Sad thing in production is that clients often come and say something along these lines: "Can you make me a drake type of beat?" Or something like: "Can you recreate that beat for me?" Requests like these only show a lack of professionalism. If you want "x" producer type of beat simply contact the producer! I know they might charge you $5000, maybe $10000, maybe $50 or you might get lucky and receive something for free.
I have developed my own sound of production and I like to keep it that way. However, I also like to look for inspiration from other amazing producers and artists. I am a part of production duo with Marlon Tunez Dixon, who has a great taste in music. He is one of the most talented people I know. We can work on virtually any genre. I might not be an expert in every single genre, but that is not the point here. With the right budget I can put the project together and hire the right people for the right spot.
